๐Ÿงฉ What is Cracturism? – Definition and Concept

Cracturism is a contemporary abstract art style defined by intricate cracks, scratches, and fragmented textures that form organically across the painted surface. Beneath these fractured layers, hidden tones and images emerge — creating an illusion of mystery, light, and emotional depth.

This style merges spontaneity and precision, where light and shadow dance over fractured surfaces. The color palette ranges from minimal monochromes to vibrant multicolor harmonies, maintaining a visual balance of movement and silence.

Cracturism can be created using oil or acrylic on canvas, wall, wood, paper, pottery, or sculpture, preserving its iconic illusion of cracked luminosity and emotional rhythm.

๐Ÿง  Cracturism – A Contemporary Abstract Language

Founded by Indian artist Ram Barkhane, Cracturism represents an evolution of modern abstraction — a dialogue between texture, form, and feeling.

It reflects how imperfection becomes beauty, where each fracture symbolizes resilience and transformation. The surface is intentionally textured, echoing the erosion of walls, stones, and memories.
Through layered pigments and deliberate scratches, the style reveals hidden stories beneath the surface, making every artwork a meditation on time, decay, and rebirth.

๐ŸŒŒ Visual Identity of Cracturism

Cracturism’s visual power lies in its fractured surface textures — intricate networks of cracks and fissures resembling aged walls or eroded earth.

Key Features:

  1. ๐Ÿ•ธ️ Cracked and Textured Surfaces: Created through artistic control, not chance.

  2. ๐ŸŽจ Layered Pigments: Underlying tones and colors reveal through textured ruptures.

  3. ⚖️ Balance of Chaos and Harmony: Spontaneous yet structured.

  4. ๐Ÿชถ Emotional Rhythm: Depth and motion through interplay of shadow and light.

These elements form a unique visual signature that connects natural imperfection with contemporary abstraction.

๐Ÿ’ญ Philosophy of Cracturism

Cracturism embodies the belief that beauty lies in imperfection. Every crack or fracture is a symbol of endurance and inner light.

It celebrates the rhythm of creation, erosion, and renewal, mirroring human emotions and experiences. The style turns “damage” into “design” — proving that even in fragmentation, there is unity and strength.

Spiritually, Cracturism bridges the material and metaphysical, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface — to find meaning in brokenness and continuity in change.

๐Ÿ•‰️ “Every crack is a story. Every fracture is a revelation.” — Ram Barkhane

๐Ÿช” The Origin Story of Cracturism

๐ŸŒฟ 1️⃣ Early Inspirations

As a child, Ram Barkhane lived in a mud house (kur) where cracked earthen walls fascinated him. Using wooden sticks, he drew shapes and faces over these natural patterns. Those early experiences became the emotional seed of Cracturism — the first connection between texture, memory, and art.

๐ŸŽจ 2️⃣ Accidental Discovery

In 2018–19, while painting a portrait of Raja Ravi Varma, Barkhane’s brush accidentally scratched the canvas, revealing the lower layer. That spontaneous mark inspired the idea of transforming accidents into aesthetic design.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, he recreated those textures intentionally. In 2020, a painting made with an iron nail on layered oil paint became the first experimental Cracturism work.

๐Ÿง‘‍๐ŸŽจ 3️⃣ Artistic Encouragement

Artists like Ashok Verma, Dr. Ramashankar Mishra, and Hansraj Chitra Bhoomi encouraged Barkhane’s experiments. By 2021, he began creating full series in this style — transforming textures into emotionally charged abstract artworks.

๐Ÿฆ… 4️⃣ The Journey of Eagles

Searching for themes, Barkhane turned to eagles — symbols of strength and vision. Through Cracturism, he expressed flight, freedom, and emotion using textured abstraction.
When his wife Sandhya appreciated these works, it marked a creative milestone — the style gained new direction and confidence.

๐ŸŽจ Colour Schemes in Cracturism

There is no fixed palette in Cracturism. Instead, Barkhane emphasizes luxury, contrast, and emotional depth.

  • ๐ŸŒ— Contrast Principle: Light base with dark top (or vice versa) enhances visible cracks.

  • ๐Ÿ’Ž Preferred Finishes: Deep tones with golden highlights to create richness.

  • ๐ŸŒˆ Emotional Colors: Earthy siennas, dark blues, blacks, and metallics evoke elegance and timelessness.

This interplay of tones gives Cracturism its distinctive luminous and layered effect.

๐Ÿ–Œ️ Mediums Used in Cracturism

Cracturism is adaptable across oil, acrylic, and digital media, though oil remains the most expressive.

  • ๐Ÿ›ข️ Oil Paints: Ideal for texture development due to slow drying and blending capacity.

  • ๐Ÿ’ง Acrylics: Fast-drying, suitable for smaller works (under 12 inches).

  • ๐Ÿ’ป Digital (Procreate/iPad): Enables experimental layering and modern reinterpretation.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best Medium: Oil Paint on Canvas — for maximum depth and realism.

๐Ÿชต Surface and Materials

Cracturism can be practiced on any texturable surface capable of withstanding layered painting and scratching:

  • Canvas ๐ŸŽจ

  • Wooden panels ๐Ÿชต

  • Walls / Murals ๐Ÿงฑ

  • Pottery / Sculpture ๐Ÿบ

  • Digital Canvas ๐Ÿ’ป

The flexibility of this style allows artists to explore new creative terrains beyond traditional boundaries.

๐ŸŒ Why Cracturism Matters in Modern Art

Cracturism extends the legacy of Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism, introducing a new philosophy of fractured beauty.
It’s more than a technique — it’s a visual poem about the resilience of the human spirit and the art of transformation through time.
